New College Application: The Coalition App

April 23, 2016 By Jolyn Brand

The Coalition Application is brand new for class of 2017. Because it’s not been tested or reviewed, my professional suggestion is only to use this application if necessary. If your college takes another application, use it instead. If you must use Coalition Application, your high school counselor might not understand how to upload transcripts orletters of recommendation.

The application is supposed to open in July for students to apply for the next school year. For example, rising seniors, class of 2017, can begin the application in July 2016 for the 2017-18 school year (which will be their first year of college). There is also a section called the “Locker and Collaboration Space” that will allow students to store documents in their “locker.” This feature’s usefulness has not been determined.

COALITION ESSAY PROMPTS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED!

Some Coalition member colleges will not require an essay at all, others will require just one of the below general essays, and still others will require one of the below general essays plus their own college-specific essay(s) and/or short-answer questions. The prompts for the 2016-17 application year are:

  • Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
  • Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.
  • Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?
  • What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?
  • Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.

Over 90 colleges have signed up to use the Coalition Application, although several (up to 30) have now said that they won’t be using the application for class of 2017.

There are 91 colleges on my list of college accepting the Coalition Application. The crooked C logo is the Coalition app. The red square CA logo means that college also accepts the Common App.

Our experience with Jolyn Brand was exceptional. She was very responsive to us and offered valuable guidance throughout the college preparation and application process. My daughter got in to all of the schools in which she applied, even her stretch school. We credit Jolyn with helping us to make sure her resume, application and essays were top notch.

Brand College Consulting was GREAT for our son! We met Ms. Brand when my son was in 7th grade! We saw her for an hour consult yearly to help him select his classes, plus a little algebra tutoring in high school. He was ahead of others course-wise and we were able to get 21 hours dual credit in high school, he made the Dean's List, Phi Theta Kappa, and Natl Society of High School Scholars. We are a family of Texas State Bobcats and it's very competitive now to get in but he did and we are thrilled! I recommend Ms. Brand and her services! My youngest daughter attended tutorial services with Ms. Brand. Due to the exemplary, SAT preparation services, my daughter was accepted into several top colleges including the University of Houston, Texas State, Lamar University, and Sam Houston. As a college student, she received scholarships and has been on the Dean's list every semester. Ms. Brand instilled confidence in my daughter. I will be forever grateful.
