A four day application camp will be held over summer 2012 for students between their junior and senior year of high school. Each class session is limited in size, so students enrolled in this camp will get individualized attention and answers.
At the end of this 4 day camp week, students will have completed several of their college applications, MONTHS before their classmates have even started.
Day 1: “Good” College Applications and Resumes
- Students will be given brief overview of Texas colleges: locations, size and admission criteria
- Students will create their selected college list, including “reach, match, and safety” schools with expert guidance and suggestions to coincide with the students’ academics, preferences and interests
- Students will review Apply Texas application format
- Students will be shown the structure of a college application resume and given a template to begin their own
- Assignment – Each student will write up his/her own resume
Day 2: College Majors and Essays
- Declaring a major vs. remaining undecided
- Students will complete online career assessment to narrow down career possibilities and college major choices
- Teacher will review all student resumes and make recommendations for changes/edits
- Students will review college essay topics and sample college essays
- Assignment – Each student will write 1st draft of college essay topic
Day 3: Short Answer Questions and Teacher Recommendations
- Students will review and answer the short answer questions of the Apply Texas college application
- Teacher will review answers and make suggestions
- Assignment- Students will complete a paper version of the Apply Texas Application, ready to be submitted
- Students will be given an overview of letters of recommendation
- Who to ask, when to ask, and how to ask nicely
- Assignment –Each student will draft his/her letter for recommendation requests
Day 4: Campus Visits and Tours
- Campus visits and tours- how to conduct yourself, questions to ask, when to visit
- Campus interviews and mock/practice interview with college admissions official
- Assignment- Students will write their answers to the most common interview questions
- Assignment– Students will complete the 2nd draft of the college essay
Individual Essay Follow-up:
Each student in entitled to an additional essay editing session. This work will be conducted online.
Students who complete all 4 days of class will walk away with:
- Their individualized college list, with appropriately selected schools
- Selection of possible college major(s)
- Student resume
- One completed and edited college essay
- Apply Texas short answer questions completed
- A personalized request for recommendation letter
- Campus visit list and questions
- The entire Apply Texas application completed
Camp Session
June 11-15 Class on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday from 1-5pm
Students will use Wednesday as an off day to complete their college essay
